What is nitrogen narcosis?

Nitrogen narcosis is a state of reduced perceptive faculty. It manifests itself in illogical reactions. This state id triggered diving with compressed air by the ?raised pressure of the air. In normal atmospheric pressure nitrogen and the rare gases have the important duty of being filling gases. They should reduce the amount of oxygen to about 21%. Nitrogen and the rare gases in the air are of no importance for breathing, as they do not react chemically in the body. Provided these filling gases (nitrogen and the rare gases) are breathed under raised pressure, they increasingly flow into the blood circulation. Consequently you must be prepared for possible symptoms of poisoning. Nitrogen narcosis makes itself known to the diver, i.e. he can feel its typical warning signals in time (f.ex. a metallic taste).

a) hallucinations (tubular look, colour TV)
b) acoustic hallucinations (?) (perception of abnormal ?
c) disorder of sensations (euphoria or feat)

To see the symptoms of nitrogen narcosis in/with your buddy is very difficult. Sometimes you can conclude nitrogen narcosis from his/her behaviour (f.ex. no reaction to underwater signs or excessive responding to the OK sign). There is no exact depth at which nitrogen narcosis starts. Sensitive divers might already feel it starting at 30m, while it normally does not set in before 40m. The danger of it is increased by all the substances influencing your brain, f.ex.

• alcohol (also the rest form the day before)
• medication a.s.o.

Further factors are

- tiredness

But fear (mostly triggered by feeling cold, by darkness, loss of orientation, etc.), physical activity under water also favour nitrogen narcosis.
As soon as the first symptoms show you must dive higher until they disappear. Then finish your dive respecting necessary decompression stops.
